Personal Style of Substance

Style is personal…but what does that even mean?

Let’s first acknowledge the fact that personal style is becoming increasingly difficult to define because in an aesthetically driven industry like fashion – let alone Instagram – the pressure of “all eyes” becomes piercing. This constant need for validation and relevance means that a lot of people start to dress alike even if there’s no intention to… We’ve all heard the old adage of “timelessness”, but you can’t deny, trends have fluctuated faster today than in any generation prior. Does timelessness even exist anymore? I don’t know.

I’ve plunged into the entrapment of trends for many years myself prior to taking a conscious and heedful stand – the democratization of fashion (i.e. fast fashion) made it all too easy and addictive. But these days, I’ve become far less concerned with what’s in-season and it’s helped me refine and minimize my buys quite a bit… I’ve never been an ultra-feminine dresser – I mean, I’ve tried, but I usually just end up feeling pretty stupid. And having been a tomboy half my life, it’s no shock that I’m constantly lulled by shapeless menswear-inspired pieces and Scandinavian aesthetic. Sure, it’s nothing new, but the fact that I’ve found a pared-back formula of basics with a feminine twist (or details) – everything embodied here really – makes me a much more efficient and quality shopper today. I’m not complaining…

This overcoat is about 4 seasons old and these trousers 6 seasons, but I can care less – both remain a favorite in my wardrobe. Corset belts are having a moment as are white hooves, so I laced myself up in this super basic outfit. I love the corset look over a plain t-shirt and this one by EmiJay is soft as ever, and the offset text makes it all the better. Back to the corset belt – it’s truly an unexpected detail that’s feminine and done in a totally fresh way. I pulled this idea off my street style inspo board…I’m not claiming to be the originator. I got stares for sure, but I couldn’t be bothered. These are just a few things I’m really into at the moment…

P.S. I really hate having my photos taken, but it’s been refreshing to do something outside of flatlays. I hope to share more fashion in this space and would really really love to hear your thoughts!
