Tearing Down Walls

tearing down walls - le jolie

Of all places in the world, New York City is one where I feel like myself the most. Everyone’s got an attitude of sinew and poignant passion that can’t really be replicated elsewhere. And for those very reasons, I can wear anything and be everything I want to be without feeling like I’m being looked at or judged.

The beauty of personal style is that it doesn’t matter what you are and what you’re wearing as long as you feel and look good wearing it – something I still struggle with. As a mother, I’m sometimes compelled to holding up a certain image of what I need to look and dress like… Donning such a lace and leather combo (and in sneakers just before shooting) here doesn’t align with my oft subservient attire in motherhood, but it very much is me. And nothing feels better than wearing exactly what you want so I’m working to tear those walls down even if I’m not strutting the ever-charming streets of West Village.

Personal style today probably sounds like a yawn-inducing aphorism, but there are lessons to be taken in documenting what you wear. It’s not about looking at what everyone else is wearing and doing the same thing or mocking what you see straight off the runway. But more so paying attention to and figuring out what brands cut their pieces in the most flattering shape for your body, the styles and trends that work well for your height & size, and the things you can skimp on and what needs to be invested in. Sounds like the first step in tearing down walls to me…

Thank you NYC for being that stepping stone.
