Two Summer Essentials That Are Really Essential

I am not one for trends – or at least I try not to be. It’s just damn near impossible to keep up with fast fashion and their expeditious production.

While I do admit I have a love-hate relationship with the Zaras of the world (for the record, they’re my weakness), I make an intentional effort to tread carefully so that by the end of the season, I’m not left with a heap of strings detached and trashed. Lesson learned the hard way in my early 20s…

Albeit believing in investing in the high end, it’s not a sustainable way of dressing when I have others to care for, food to buy, and Internet to use. And that’s where the low end comes in.

I’m dressed in high street head to toe because for as long as I can remember, I haven’t worn a denim mini, straw bag, or espadrilles (though they’re about 6 seasons old now, but who cares? I don’t) since high school. But as is the case with most things in fashion, everything gets recycled and repurposed so here I am in two summer essentials I’d never imagine donning again at this age… And since I can’t guarantee I’ll continually gravitate towards them next summer, it makes perfect sense to skimp on quality for the sake of maintaining a seasonally relevant wardrobe. At this point in the year though, I’ve maximized their wear to the extent that this skirt and bag will probably deteriorate as quickly as fall appears – deemed real summer essentials to me.
