The glamorous life of blogging and traveling is actually not so glamorous…
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what I actually do on my job and what I do when I travel to NYC. While no day or weekend is the same, I wanted to share a snapshot of what it looks like by doing “A Day in the Life of a Freelance Content Creator” type post. I’m really sharing a summary of my weekend from two weeks ago since my standard day-to-day doesn’t change that much. Plus, the Big Apple is where the excitement happens especially in my line of work. So, here we go…
Saturday: Meetings
I have to do a lot of planning pre-NYC just because I need to be able to fit everyone I work with in my schedule. This trip was originally planned for leisure but turned into work. Anyway, getting into the city is always a pain in the ass and my Lyft driver totally screwed me with time because of his stupid route, so I got in later than anticipated. Once I got in, I headed straight for Zanita’s apartment to drop off my goods and then grabbed dim sum (a MUST when in NYC).
I always get stressed when I have to go to NYC because I’m often without a photographer. I can’t seem to produce enough images for my blog. So, I was extremely grateful for Sophia Liu – an aspiring fashion photographer. She reached out to me on IG to collaborate on photos, which is exactly what you see here today! I love working with photographers who understand the dynamic shots and angles bloggers need. Plus, she was so sweet and easy to work with.
After that, I had my first meeting and dinner with Jessica as you may have saw on her stories. She’s so much fun and full of personality – make sure you follow her on IG to see exactly what I mean.
Sunday: Shooting
Sunday ended up being more chill than I expected, but I still had a busy morning. I met up with Tina to work on photos. We shot three looks, which I’ll be sharing later this week. I really love shooting bloggers that have a strong sense of personal style and are not afraid to move around while shooting. Tina is a newer blogger, but her posing abilities are no where close to a neophyte. She’s just so flawless in front of the camera.
I really love what I do because it gives me the opportunity to meet amazing people like Tina – she’s become someone I can call a friend 🙂 For lust-worthy travels and killer views of NYC, follow her now!
Monday: Meetings, Shooting, & Event
I met up with Tina again on Monday for brunch at the most adorable spot in Chinatown, Sweet Memory. They make really amazing waffles and the cutest, most Instagrammable drinks I’ve ever seen. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop by.
We shot one look around Chinatown before I had to dash off to meet Neyla. I met Neyla back in September for the first time and we just really hit it off from the get go. She’s a new NYC transplant from Paris and is sharing her journey making the big move. For those of you who have asked me about how to move to NYC, follow her diary here.
Then, I spent the evening at a blogger event. I was so beat by Monday evening, but I realize how important it is to show your face, so I went to make a quick introduction. More to come on this… It was also funny because I ran into two bloggers who just discovered my blog and recognized my story! It was a really flattering and humbling moment for me.
Tuesday: Shootings & Meetings
I headed straight for Tina’s apartment bright and early to get an indoor session in, then I went back to work with Neyla some more. And finally, ended my trip at Zanita & Gustav’s office where we discussed future goals, strategy, and plans for the upcoming months.
As you can see, NYC is lots of running around for me! I almost feel like 20% of the trip is spent commuting and running from one place to another. My flight also ended up getting delayed, so what was supposed to be a 9 p.m. arrival to Charlotte became a 4 a.m. arrival. Nine hours stuck at JFK was no fun and such a waste of time. (I hate American Airlines.) So there you go… a day in the life of a freelance content creator.
While I love what I do so deeply and I get to work with people I actually enjoy being around, it has its downfalls that obviously don’t outweigh the perks 🙂 #countingmyblessings It also takes me sooo long to recover from these trips – and that explains two weeks of radio silence, but it’s the nature of my work! One day, I’ll get it together though…
