Contouring Mediums

Like most girls, I use the highlighting/contouring technique to add extra dimension to my face, but I probably didn’t need to add another brush to my ever-growing collection. All along, I’ve felt something was missing though – I didn’t own anything that was dense yet flexible enough to add strong, but seamless shadows to my face. What I already owned was either too dense, too fluffy, or just plain big. The good news is, I finally found the one. Here’s a run down of what’s in my stash:

MAC 129 – This brush was my go-to for bronzer/contouring powder for the longest time, but what annoys me most about it is how much it sheds. By the time I’m done, I have little hairs all over my face. Not only that, but it is pretty fluffy, which means it doesn’t pick up as much color as I’d like it to. That being said, I do still really like this brush.

MAC 109 – Next is this little one, which has a nice density to it along with flexible bristles to create the contours I’m looking for, but it covers a larger area than I’d like. It’s a blending perfection, making it a better option for ultra pigmented blushes (in my opinion) than contouring as it fits the cheek area perfectly.

Sigma F84 – This ever-popular Sigma Angled Kabuki brush was never my favorite for contouring. I find it way too dense, it picks up way too much color, and ultimately, it’s a tad too big. This brush is, however, great for blending alone just not application. It’s also one of my only face brushes I find great for multiple mediums – powders, liquids, and cream products so it is useful for some things, just not contouring.

My newest addition, as alluded to in the previous post, is this Napoleon Perdis Angled Contour Sable Brush. It is completely ideal in so many ways – the shape of the brush, density, and fluffiness are all on point. It picks up the perfect amount of color and easily blends out product in the most unnoticeable manner. As of yesterday, it’s replaced my MAC 129 when I’m opting for a more sculpted look. It’s even small enough to run down the sides of your nose. If you’ve been stuck in my rut for a while, I highly suggest you jump on board.
