Lash Love

Mascara combo
Mascara

If I’ve learned anything about mascaras over the years, it’s that they’re definitely not a one-fits-all type ordeal. I’m all about the eyes so that means anything screaming lift, separate, and thicken (all-in-one) really draws my attention. My thin limp lashes don’t curl too well making my expectations quite high in this world. Surprisingly, I’ve found that I prefer my drugstore options to my higher-end mascaras – distinctly, the L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara and Revlon Grow Luscious Lash Potion Mascara, which I’ve used in unison for the last two years. I always start with two coats of the Telescopic Mascara because the formulation and brush combo are excellent at coating and separating my lashes. I do notice a pretty hefty lift and curl without even using an eyelash curler. I then follow up with two additional coats of the lash potion, which is basically the best thickening mascara ever. The formula here is what I prefer because it feel pretty wet once applied and I think that really allows it to latch on to my lashes, which can be built up from there. The fat brush really helps amp up the volume too. This combo here has been hands down the best for me so far.

Sitting in my stash is also Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara and Lancôme’s Hypnôse Drama Waterproof Mascara, which I like to pair up occasionally. I’m sure you’ve heard several praises about They’re Real and I do agree with the reviews for the most part, but where I’m not the biggest fan is in the brush. It just feels ultra prickly…like I feel my eyes are being poked at or something. I get the point of the spiky ball head as it really allows you to maneuver between the tiniest lashes in the inner corners, but geez it hurts a little to get there. Lancome’s Hypnose is really the epitome of separating and curling (without a lash curler), however, it is a pain in the tush to remove (i.e. the waterproof formula). I’ve learned that I’m not particularly fond of waterproof formulas although they tend to hold a better curl. It sticks like gum to my lashes even after makeup remover plus two rounds of face washing. After a long tiring day, it requires too much effort to remove the makeup that I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

The two latest ones I’ve been sampling are the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara and Clarins Be Long Mascara. Urban Decay is typically a game changer in the makeup world, but this mascara needs some work. It doesn’t do anything for me and makes my lashes stick straight out. I’m not sure what the deal was, but it felt pretty useless to me. The Clarins, on the other hand, is actually impressive and I especially enjoy it on my lower lashes. From a performance perspective, it’s similar to the previously mentioned L’Oreal with a wetter formula and slightly better brush (loves)!

Have I missed out on any good ones? I’m tempted to try the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, but does it live up to the hype??
